Moths are voracious – they've annihilated my world more than once; may we all be post-month one day.
Apologies for coming to this so late, and this comment is mostly tangential to your post's deep wisdom, but have you read Annie Dillard? She tells good stories about months in Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, An American Childhood, and (especially) Holy the Firm. If you're not familiar with her work, I think you'd enjoy it (her nonfiction specifically).
Thank you John! I have not read her—most of my reading has been confined to the 19th century and I’m completely ignorant of the modern writers—even the best. It’s embarrassing.
Love Yeats. Your moth reminded me of this promise in the Joel 2
““So I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, The crawling locust, The consuming locust, And the chewing locust, My great army which I sent among you.”
Maybe moths are afraid to come to NYC, at least in my case they have not become a roommate for me here. But I do have a daughter who lost it all in the Palisades fire and she will love this! Keep going, girlfriend. You are a star!
....when the real suffering began in my life, I made a sign that says, "KEEP YER MOUTH SHUT" and put it on a wall where I can't ignore it. It cut me waaaay down on doing what you say here that made me laugh out loud, "Talking about things I can't have while I still want them..." I'm laughing as I write it out because it's such a big hidden fact of life. The real POWER of human speech is a mysterious power diluted by the podsnappery of evilmortalpowersthatbe. Rock on MizRegina

Keep up the good work you're doing.

That's great! I believe Annie Dillard's master's thesis was on Thoreau – quite different from Dickens, but a writer confined to the 19th century.
Also, you've read Merton, and that's impressive for a young person today.

Thank you And Yet! One of my favorite words~Restore. One can always hope for it.

This is why I love you Ina--you have a way of building up!
I'm sorry about your daughter and her loss--never, ever easy.
But she has you as a mom, which means she's more than ahead in the game. : )

Thank you Oaf! Your words mean a lot to me.
There is so much trickery in our thoughts--like Shakespeare's Richard II:
"My brain I'll prove the female to my soul, my soul the father,
And these two beget a generation of still breeding thoughts."
... keeping the mouth shut does a lot to reign them in!
